On Seeing

As I was taking these photographs on the Oregon Coast, a van pulled up out of nowhere. Out tumbled a mother with her two kids. The woman scurried right up to me and quickly let her gaze wander over the site before eying me curiously me from the side.

“What are you taking pictures of?” She finally asked. Her voice was saturated with puzzlement.

I turned towards her. “I’m taking pictures of the fog,” I said.

“The fog?”

“Yes, the fog.”

A pause.

Her eyes inspected me one more time. Then she looked out on the stretch of beach that was visible. Then she shrugged.

And then they left.
